CARF SURVEY DATE OCTOBER 1-3, 2007

Coming Soon

A survey team from CARF* will be visiting our premises on

October 1-3, 2007

We invited the CARF surveyors to evaluate how well our services meet international standards for quality. The survey team will be looking at many things about us and our services. The survey will tell us what we are doing well and ways we might improve. As a result of this survey, our services may earn or continue CARF accreditation.

As part of the survey, the surveyors will interview people who use our services, their families, our personnel, and others. Some questions the survey team members might ask people are:

·        Are our services provided in a clean and safe setting?
·        Do you receive the services you need and want?
·        Are you treated with respect?
·        Do you take part in planning your services?
·        Are you told what you need to know about your services?
·        Are your questions answered in a way you understand?
·        Do you know where to go with questions or concerns?

If you would like to talk with one of the CARF survey team members or want to learn more about CARF, please Loretta Rucchin. Loretta can be reached at 604.936.9944 or Loretta@howesound.net. You may also contact CARF directly.

Howe Sound Opens Holly Park House

At long last Howe Sound's newest group home opened on Novemeber 21, 2006. Throughout the planning and construction process the 6 bed group home was billed as the new Guildford Glen. However, the home has been rechristened Holly Park House by its new residents. Holly Park is the culmination of nearly five years of dreaming and planning on the part of Fraser Health Authority, our stakeholders and staff. It is now our largest and most up-to-date group home the society operates.

Fraser Health Authority Awards Assisted Living Housing to Howe Sound

Earlier in 2006, Howe Sound was awarded by the Fraser Health Authority to manage two 20 unit assisted living housing developments in the Fraser North and South regions. Fraser Health is assessing and will be referring individuals for suitability as residents. The residents must be capable of self-directing their own care and require a maximum of two prescribed services. Therefore, all residents must be capable of maintaining a certain level of independence in order to reside in these buildings. The site for the Fraser North 20 unit apartment building is on Sixth Street at 17th Avenue in South Burnaby near the New Westminster border and the site for the Fraser South 20 unit Apartment building is in Surrey, near Guildford Mall. The buildings will be two storeys high and encompass 20 self-contained, fully wheelchair accessible suites. The building will look as any other apartment building does on the outside, but will have a communal kitchen and dining area as well as a communal lounge. The building will be overseen by a Residence Administrator, and be staffed by LPN's and Assisted Living Workers. There will also be a full time cook during the dayshift. There are to be no structured programs, as residents are expected to be self-sufficient enough to access and conduct their business in their surrounding community. Howe Sound will be responsible for overseeing the development of the buildings and the day to day operations and service delivery. Independent Living BC (ILBC) will provide financial assistance to build the facility and subsidize the residents’ rental expenses while Fraser Health will deliver or fund personal care services for ILBC residents and top up hospitality costs not covered by residents’ rent contributions. Together, we hope to build two impressive facilities and provide a valuable service to the community.

Howe Sound North Ceremony of Construction

On Tuesday December 6th2006, Howe Sound joined with our partners and press in celebrating the beginning of construction of our first Assisted Living building known presently as Howe Sound North. Speaking at the event alongside Society President Iain Brown were Local MLA John Nuraney and Fraser Health Representative Sherry Park. The speakers, along with Society founder Tonnar Brace, unveiled an architectural rendering of the facility and took up shovels and hardhats to perform a belated groundbreaking. This event is an important step for what will soon become a cornerstone of the services we offer to individuals with disabilities in the Lower Mainland. With construction underway, Howe Sound North is poised to open mid-2007 with its counterpart Howe Sound South following shortly thereafter. These Assisted Living apartment buildings will provide an innovative model of care in the Fraser Health region through providing affordable accommodations, as well as hospitality and support services to individuals with physical disabilities.
