Community Leisure Schedule

What is the ABI Community Leisure Program (CLP)?

CLP is a community based leisure day program that offers client-centred program schedules and supports to individuals with an acquired brain injury. CLP is a highly individualized program that helps people access community resources to enhance their quality of life. CLP operates at flexible times to accommodate the various needs of its participants.

When does it operate?

CLP operates Monday to Friday between 10am - 4pm (depending on the schedule) and is closed for statutory holidays.

What program does the CLP offer?

CLP offers a variety of social, recreational and leisure programs to participants throughout the week. Howe Sound's responsibility is to research suitable programs that match the individuals' preferences, provide staffing support and transportation.

CLP offers the following programs for individuals to participate in:

Activity Program
The Activity Program is a social, recreational, community based program. CLP staff assist with the planning component of the outings. Participants are involved in all aspects of the program such as identifying activities, planning activities based on budget allowances, making monthly schedules and participating in the planned activity. Participants are ultimately responsible for identifying preferred activities in local communities throughout the lower mainland.

Explorations Program
The Explorations Program is community based with a focus on outdoor activities and outdoor fitness. Participants are ultimately responsible for identifying preferred activities and developing monthly schedules.

Art Program
The Art Program is a community based art program. The facility is located in the heart of Port Moody, City of the Arts, in a local art studio. The building is shared with many other artists’ within the tri-cities community. The program facilitator plans weekly sessions with a focus on personal development and self awareness using a variety of art mediums.

Cooking Program
The Cooking Program is a community based program, located in the Poirier Recreation center in Coquitlam. Participants are involved in meal planning and meal preparation. Following the session, participants receive the menu plan of the day (list of ingredients and instructions) to take home as a future resource. Meals prepared in the cooking program are used for the Toonie lunch program.

Movie Night
The Movie Night program runs from the Clubhouse. Participants choose the movie they want to watch & enjoy the show in the comfort of the Clubhouse lounge.

Tai Chi (Seasonal)
The Tai Chi program is a community based model run out of the Poirier recreation center in Coquitlam. The program is lead by a certified instructor, leading participants through many different Tai Chi techniques. This program is offered seasonally and has capacity for 10 or more individuals.

Fitness Program
Participants of the fitness program will spend the first half of the program in the fitness center accessing weights and cardio equipment at the local Coquitlam Aquatic Center. The second half of the program will focus on leisure swim and fitness swim.

Who is this service for and how do I apply?

Any person who has an acquired brain injury is encouraged to join the Community Leisure Program. Referrals can be made through the Fraser Health Authority Acquired Brain Injury Program. Once a referral or application has been received an information package is sent out to the individual. Included with the information package is a checklist of activities that are offered. Individuals will check off activities that they wish to participate in and return it to Howe Sound. An intake planning meeting will be arranged to get acquainted with the individual and their specific areas of interest.

What kind of staffing can I expect?

The CLP provides employment to individuals that have a background in the field and Howe Sound screens them for suitability. They are required to have a clear criminal record check, a clear TB test result, a doctor's note, and favourable reference checks. On a typical programming day, one staff person supports anywhere from 2 to 5 individuals depending on level of need or support the individual requires.

Choosing staff to work with you?

It is important that participants feel comfortable with staff and we do our best to coordinate a suitable match based on any information you provide us. However, sometimes conflicts can occur and the Program Coordinator will attempt to rectify the problem or make other arrangements. Howe Sound staff are unionized and bound by a collective agreement.

What kind of training do the staff receive?

  • Health and Safety Standards
  • Human Rights and Employment Standards
  • NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention)
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Variety of in-services related to acquired brain injury and health care
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Acquired Brain Injury education

Where does CLP operate from and how do I get there?

CLP is based out of our Club House located at 955 Brunette Ave in Coquitlam. This location is the central meeting place for all program participants. Depending on the daily schedule, Howe Sound staff will coordinate transportation to individuals during program time. Participants will be expected to find their own transportation to and from the club house. If there are problems getting to and from the program, Howe Sound staff will collaborate with the participant and/or care provider to find a workable solution. Activities will take place at the club house as well as all over the lower mainland.

Who pays for the activities?

This will be determined on a per-activity-basis. As much as reasonably possible, the CLP will cover activity costs. When activities require a significant fee eg.concerts, participants may be asked to pay all or part of the fee. As much as Howe Sound would like to pay for all activity fees, it would drive up the program costs.

Who pays for the food?

Participants are asked to bring or buy their own meals unless the program incorporates a meal (eg. BBQ, Cooking Class) As much as Howe Sound would like to provide meals, it would greatly increase the program costs.
