What is the Headway Centre Program?

The Vancouver and Coquitlam Headway Centre Program is a community based program for people with acquired brain injuries to volunteer in work departments, develop and maintain friendships and participate in recreational and leisure activities.
 

Headway Departments

Members of the Headway Centre, work side-by-side with staff, using their abilities and strengths, to complete the work of the centre. In doing this the members build self-confidence, regain and develop skills to reach their personal goals and become more independent and self-sufficient.
 
When do departments operate?
The departments operate from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday and are closed for all statutory holidays.
 
What departments are available?
Members participate in running the centre by volunteering in any of these work departments:
  • Maintenance Department
  • Communications Department
  • Membership Department
  • Community Planning Department
  • Prevention Outreach Department
  • Kitchen Department

What are some of the Work Department job duties?

Maintenance Department
Cleaning, Vacuuming/floors, Painting, Garbage & recycling, Cleaning the fridge, Renovation projects, Cleaning windows, Dusting, In charge of Headway Centre pick ups
 
Communications Department
Handouts, Flyers, Newsletters, Brochures, Meeting minutes, Memos, Data entry, Admin work, Monthly calendar, Letters needed for Headway Centre functions, Updating visuals inside Headway Centre (bulletin board), Planning and preparation for materials
 
Membership Department
Mail outs, Monthly rec flyers, Giving tours, Maintaining contact with new members, Answering calls/reception, Weekly meetings, Reach-out calls to members, Celebrate all of the members birthdays for the month, A buddy system is set up, Help with the monthly calendar, Goal planning, Record keeping, Tabulating attendance, office ordering
 
Community Planning Department
Responsible for planning community outings or events ie. fundraising initiatives, Monthly Birthday parties, Plan excursions & trips, Holiday events (x-mas)group tours museums, corporate businesses, art galleries, educational facilities, Attend cultural events.Excursions & trip
 
Prevention Outreach Department
Works with GF Strong, Speak to elementary schools, Target ages that will be receiving drivers licenses, Educating the public, Participating in various health fairs, Assisting members with housing or financial issues, Hospitals & clinics, Homeless shelters
 

Headway Drop-in Program

The drop-in program is a venue for people with an acquired brain injury to participate in social, recreational, and leisure activities on a drop-in basis.
 
When can I drop in?
Drop-in activities are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday with scheduled programming after 1 p.m. Drop-in is closed for statutory holidays.
 
What drop-in activities are unscheduled and available anytime?

How Can I Join the Headway Centre Program?

Headway Centre Program members must meet the following criteria:
  • Members must have experienced a brain injury and be at least 19 years of age
  • Members must be able to manage their own medications, self care needs and do not require attendant care
  • Members must not display severe behavioural challenges or pose a health and safety threat to the members and staff
  • Members must be able to get to and from the Centre independently
 
**Members requiring any personal assistance must be accompanied by their own attendant.
 
Do I need a membership to join the Headway Centre Program?
Yes, Members must complete a membership form and meet criteria to access programs independently.
  • Individual membership is $12 annually and is prorated from April to April at $1/month.
  • Financial assistance may be available,please enquire
  • Membership entitles an individual to participate in both Departments and Drop-in programs
  • Members are automatically entitled to receive newsletters and email distributions
  • Please note: membership does not apply to the Community Leisure Program
