Howe Sound Rehabilitation Services Society operates two Assisted Living Buildings; Liberty Place and Freedom Place. Liberty Place is located in East Burnaby and Freedom Place in North Surrey. Both buildings have 20 - one bedroom fully accessible units with their own bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. Each building offers hospitality and personal assistance services to young adults with physical disabilities. Individuals live independently but may require regular staff assistance with daily activities.
The core principles of assisted living are choice, privacy, independence, individuality, dignity, and respect. Howe Sound offers tenants choices, respects their privacy and personal decisions and accommodates their right to take risks.

How Much is the Monthly Rent and What Services are Included?
Assisted Living units are funded under the Province of BC’s Independent Living BC Program (ILBC). For tenants, the cost of monthly rent is 70% of after tax income. The remainder is subsidized by the Province of BC.
Rent Includes:
- Your own unfurnished private suite with lockable door
- Three nutritious meals a day in the main dining room as well as daily snacksWeekly housekeeping and flat laundry service (linens and towels )
- Use of common amenity space
- Access to recreational and activity programs
- 24-hour emergency call system
- Daily nursing support
- Staff assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing,
- dressing, grooming, mobility and eating
- Staff assistance with medication management
- 24 hour staffing coverage to provide personal assistance to tenants
Are There Any Additional Expenses?
Extra costs not included in your rent:
- Damage deposit
- Personal furnishings
- In suite telephone, television cable, or internet charges
- Personal grooming supplies
- Hairdressing services
- Transportation to and from activities or appointments
- PharmaCare premiums and deductibles
- Medications not covered by PharmaCare
- Health equipment not covered by extended benefits
- Personal items such as dry-cleaning, newspaper and magazines
- Personal laundry (coin operated machines are available on each floor) Tenant Insurance
How Do I Apply to Move into Assisted Living?
Individuals interested in moving into Assisted Living must be referred through a Fraser Health case manager. If you are a current client of Home Health services, discuss your care needs with your case manager and they will work with you to determine whether Assisted Living is the best option to meet your needs.
If you are not a current Home Health client, you will need to be assessed by a case manager. Contact your local Home Health Office to request an assessment.
