Programs/Services » Supported Independent LivingSupported Independent Living (SIL)What is the Supported Independent program? (SIL) SIL supports individuals of all ages and disabilities in their homes and local community. SIL is an individualized program that helps people achieve their identified goals. Some of the supports we provide for individuals to enhance their quality of life include community inclusion/integration, lifeskills, daily living skills and social skills development, problems solving, making appointments and organization and planning. When does it operate? SIL personnel work at flexible times throughout the day to accommodate the various needs of its participants. SIL is closed for statutory holidays. What does the Supported Independent Living program offer? SIL offers individuals the opportunity to receive specific support to help them acheive their personal goals. Most of the programs will fall under these broad categories: · Interpersonal skills training
· Meal planning/grocery shopping
· Personal finances/budgeting
· Leisure planning/ Participation in recreation and leisure programs
· Use of community transportation
· Addressing medical/mental/health care issues
· Cooking and housekeeping duties
· Life and social skills development
The program also incorporates a variety of home based programs, where individuals are supported to increase their day to day abilities; learning to care for their own personal needs and home environment. Again, programs will vary widely depending on the individuals need. Who is this service for and how do I apply? This service is for children, youth and adults with disabilities. Referrals can be made through Ministry for Children and Family Development, Community Living British Columbia, WCB, Fraser Health Authority and Coastal Health Authority. What kind of support can I expect? The program provides 1:1 ratios. However, group activities will be optional. The SIL workers are carefully recruited by Howe Sound. They must have a background in the field and Howe Sound screens for suitability. They are required to have a clear criminal record check, a clear TB test result, a doctor’s note, clear driver’s abstract (if transporting individuals in a private vehicle), NVCI, and favourable reference checks. Choosing service providers to work with you. It is important to us that individuals feel comfortable with their workers and we’ll do our best to coordinate a suitable match based on any information you provide us. However, sometimes conflicts can occur and the Program Manager will attempt to rectify the problem or make other arrangements. Where does SIL operate from? SIL operates in the client’s home or community. For more information about SIL please contact: Melissa Irving, BA
